Meet Me In The Dark Evaluation and Inspiration

Evaluation:

Personally I feel that our work is successful because it does communicate appropriately to our target audience, we scrapped a lot of scenes and made changes where appropriate to better continue our work. We were not afraid to do more editing and more filming to help our film be more powerful upon the audience. However I feel as if we did not exercise this enough and there was more editing to be done and really we needed to scrap some scenes like the dream scene because it was left over from when we were focusing on the story of Katie falling in love with Jess. Same with the email scene and I think we needed to keep away from that storyline and focus more on the homophobic bullying because that is the aim of our project and I don’t feel as if we fully invisdgioned that. In its place I would like to show the physical implications of the homophobic bullying more, because yes we see the emotional side but I feel as if our film would be better if it showed physical horrific bullying and this would relate more to our quote at the end of Meet Me in the Dark. I also feel as if the transitions would be more smoother and I also regret not using Windows Movie Maker and not Windows Live Movie Maker because the sepia tone effect used in the flashbacks is more concentrated and looks a lot better, and if I had used that editing system it would of been easy to add a voice over in the hall scene; which I think was needed. I also feel as if personally didn’t use enough editing, especially as it was what I was being marked on because the techniques were so simple, and so very few that I feel as if I wasn’t using my editing skills to the full potential.  I also feel as if the characters in the film weren’t very well defined, mainly because we don’t even know the protagonists name, and the other weren’t very clear, and I feel as if this may confuse the audience. I also feel as from when we first started filming to now that I would like to refilm some scenes because in hindsight there is so much more we could of done,  and so many more ways we could of incorporated editing into the film more, and with this it would have looked more professional and generally better. I have learned from this and in the next project we will have more experience and we will be able to incorporate editing into the project. We will also know what to focus upon on the next project.

Influences:

For our work we used lots of different influences in our work. We used influence from films, music and other mediums to help our work develop. We used influences from music and used them in our actual work, like using the song ‘Sexuality’ by k.d. Lang in the hall scene because the song fit the scene perfectly and it solved the problem of not using a monolouge. It would also communicate the issue to the audience initially and that was the purpose of Meet Me In The Dark. We also took inspiration from other songs like Power Seduction Cries from the Black Swan offical soudtrack and we used this in our eventual suicide scene and we took influences from the movie itslef as their is slef harming scens in that inside a bathroom, so that scene is very much influenced by Black Swan. Alternativly it is influenced by the film ‘the rules of attraction’ because in that their is a suicide scene where the protagonist sits in a bath, slits her writst and dies, this mianly influenced our attemepted suicide scene but their are aspects in this scene. Talking of films we used other films to influence our film, we took influence from “The Dark Knight” when in our dream scene we were originally going to use makeup to have an impact on the audience and to make it seem more like a dream and show the fears that homosexual people have. We took this from tha fact that the makeup that joker wears is scray and makes you feel unconmfortable, however we chaged this later as makeup was not what we were being marked form, and we dont know that much about make up, and is not communicating our issue.

Changes in the film.

Anna Richards
We have done many changes to the film in the past week. The first big change we did was scraping the failed attempt at suicide becuase we felt it was too long winded and it distracted the audience from the actually story line (which is the effects of homophobia). Also, the failed attempt was well -filmed and we really liked the scene (espically the song) but it didn't have any pyschology effects and thats what we wanted. We felt that it wasn't that clear that Katie (the main character) had failed at suicide so we scraped it.
So we needed a new scene to replace the failed suicide attempt. We both hit on the idea of having the bully (Charlotte) talking to the camera and would be a spoken monologue. The monologue including why she was bullying Katie. We dediced she would be a victim of homophobic bullying and thats why she is doing it to Katie has a way of fitting intro society. We dediced on that because that is what some bullies do, try and fit in by copying what other people do. Hannah and I thought it would it be effective because it is what happens in real life.
I was ifluenced by a film I watched a while ago, which is called Totally F***ed Up and is all done on a video camera and is spilt into 15 chapters. It has "interviews" with all the characters. I thought it was a really simple but effective idea. So we dediced to use the idea. We also did a "interview" with Katie. We dediced Katie should bascially rant and become really angry which sparks suicide. We thought it was a good gateway into the suicide scene.

During this scence we started of with static from the televison, I thought of this idea after watching a music video from one of my favourite bands, Uh Huh Her. The video has static occasionally  throughout the video and I thought it was a really good way of breaking up the video. Mainly because both scene's are on the same set and it's an easier way to show Charlotte has finished her monologue. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdIHK6L6j4s < where I got the static idea from).  I also think it adds a good effect and somehow rough but good effect to the video.
We have kept the suicide scene becuase we think its a great powerful scene, probably the best scene we have done because of the camera angles and it gives you the shivers when you watch it. We have added a fact about homophobia at the end because it makes the audience realised that it is all based on the world and how little things can effect people greatly. We kept the credits black and white because other wise it looks too fancy and we don't like it. The final edit is up on YouTube now and here's the link:
